Important Bird Area Caretaker Program
Important Bird Areas (IBAs) are identified to help conserve the integrity of habitat used by many species of birds during their migration periods and breeding seasons. This identification encourages governments and others to formally protect these sites.
There are six IBAs on Prince Edward Island that have been selected for the Caretaker program.
• Canavoy and Adjacent Beaches
• Orwell Bay
• Bedeque Bay
• Malpeque Bay
• Cascumpec Bay & Alberton Harbour
• PEI National Park
Volunteer IBA Caretakers work to:
• Assess IBA sites
• Collect data on bird species
• Help with restoration of habitat
• Help with public outreach & raising awareness of IBAs
