Fund Raising

Our funding is generally on a year-to-year and project-by-project basis. Like many not for profit groups, we solicit funds annually from governments, a variety of foundations, businesses and corporations, as well as hosting several of our own annual fund raising events. We are very grateful for the support of many local businesses and our more than 450 members and donors both on- and off-Island.

TREES IN TRUST

Our latest fund-raising initiative, Trees In Trust, enables donors to pay for a mapped piece of forest which will then be dedicated in their name. With sizes to fit all budgets, Trees In Trust woodland makes an ideal gift or memorial. Corporate donors can use Trees In Trust to reduce their C02 footprint and gain valuable publicity.

Our annual fund raising events include a dinner and auction held in early spring and a bird seed sale and bird count in autumn. These events, as well as guided walks and tours we arrange during the summer, combine fund raising with a fun event that educates people about who we are and what we do.

The 24th Annual Fundraising Dinner was on April 18, 2008 at the Delta Prince Edward Ballroom, Charlottetown.  This event was a great success with many silent and live auction items, three raffles and fabulous door prizes.  Original art and reproductions, carvings, gardening packages, cooking packages were offered in this fun event.  This is the biggest annual fundraiser for the Trust, and one that raises sufficient funds to lever many times more funds for Trust projects each year.  We sold just over 265 tickets and raised about $18,000.  Many thanks to all of our wonderful donors and to those who came to make this a fun and very succssful evening.

The Annual Seeds of Conservation Bird Seed Sale has changed to a new venue and has a new partner.  In a new arrangement with Phillips Feed Ltd. the Nature Trust participated in a Phillips bird seed sale in November, 2007.  That association was so successful for both the Trust and the feed mill that we are doing it all again!  The Trust will benefit from a portion of the proceeds of all wild bird seed sales starting February 1, 2008 and continuing indefinitely.   Support the Nature Trust while you buy your bird seed!

When you buy bird seed at Phillips Feed in Charlottetown, you  support Island Nature Trust.

The Annual Bennett Birding Classic

Each autumn a team of superb birders spend nearly 24 hours in the field searching for as many species as possible.  Following strict rules, the team reports results to Island Nature Trust and to the Natural History Society of PEI.  The team themselves, Nature Trust Directors, staff and friends all work before hand to collect pledges either per species or lump sum.  This fun event not only raises funds fo the Trust's programs, but it provides valuable information on auatumn populations and species of birds on PEI.

Each August work begins on this project and everyone is invited to form a team themselves and to get out and find as many species as they can - for conservation!

We have established an Endowment Fund in an effort to secure some longer-term funding. Bequests, in memoriam donations and directed donations are allocated to the Fund. Once the Fund reaches a reasonable size, one half of the annual income may be used to support our ongoing conservation work.
