With its distinctive white head and tail, and a wingspan of up to eight feet, the Bald Eagle is the largest bird of prey on Prince Edward Island. For many of us, this majestic bird is the symbol of wilderness. As recently as the 1980s, only one pair of eagles was known to nest on the Island. Thanks in part to the efforts of private landowners and government and non-government conservation organizations, this had increased to more than 35 known nests by 2007. Our popular Adopt-an-Eagle program combines public education with habitat protection. This program has seen literally thousands of school children - as well as individual Islanders and people from across North America - get involved in habitat conservation and learning about Bald Eagles on PEI. As a result, 193 eagle chicks have been “adopted” and over $19,000 has been raised for local conservation efforts. Here’s how the program works: School classes, community groups, businesses or individuals can “adopt” a bald eagle chick for $100. In return, they receive a beautiful certificate with artwork by Island illustrator P. John Burden, a guest speaker and slide show featuring some amazing Bald Eagle photos and information, and an official tax receipt. The certificate is suitable for framing and includes the number of the chick’s leg band, the date and place the bird was banded, and the name of the chick (optional). The PEI Fish and Wildlife Section keeps information on sightings of Bald Eagles and all information on adopted birds is passed along to the “parents”.
